Newsletter from the USRK and the Salvation Army Utrecht

This newsletter (in Dutch) gives us an update about the efforts of a refugee project group, initiated by the Utrechtse Stedelijke Raad van Kerken (USRK), the Diaconal Platform in Utrecht and the Salvation Army in 2015. This initiative originated after the refugee influx into Europe in September 2015 and was aimed at supporting the refugees in Utrecht through various works and organisations.  Holy Trinity Utrecht has financially supported these efforts through USRK.

Chaplain’s Letter: Retreating from the World

This months Chaplain’s Letter is written by the Rev David Phillips, Utrecht Chaplain Summer is upon us once again and with the fair weather we turn our minds to holidays! The word “holidays” comes from “holy days”, which was, in an earlier age, a reason for taking time off from work, on days other than the Sunday Sabbath.  Or in the past, in Europe, there were more extended “holi-days” for those who chose to go…

Our Lord all Radiant

This submission is from a member of the congregation at Holy Trintiy Utrecht, who was encouraged to share her experience during worship, and who wishes to remain anonymous. November 2016, All Souls On that Sunday I went to Church especially because I had an appointment with my cousin. We had arranged for both of us to go to our own churches and, at exactly eleven o’clock, to pray for the souls of our deceased family…

Kerkennacht 2017

At Holy Trinity Church, for Kerkennacht, we will sing (as in Job 35 and Acts 16) Psalms through the Night.  The choir of our church, with the cooperation of others, will be singing all the Psalms in the great variety of ways we know in the Netherlands during the 12 hours after opening the doors on Saturday evening at 19:00. Undoubtedly, Jesus himself also sang psalms in the synagogue and at home.

Heroes of the Faith: Henry Venn (The Younger) 1796-1873

As a supplement to our year long focus on Anglicanism: A Gift in Christ we are considering important figures in the history of Anglicanism and especially those who are inspiration to us in their lives given to mission. The Rev Grant Crowe, Chaplain in Amersfoort, has prepared these reflections on Heroes of the Faith.” Henry Venn (sometimes called ‘Henry Venn the Younger’ to distinguish from his noted grandfather Henry Venn), has been called one of…

Pentecost and God’s answer to Babel

This months Chaplain’s Letter is written by the Rev Sam van Leer, Groningen Chaplain Church seasons seem to fly past us in the course of the year. Most of our annual festivals connect with key points in Christ’s life — his birth (Christmas), the Visit of the Magi (Epiphany), Jesus’ presentation in the Temple (Candlemas), his baptism, his temptation in the wilderness (Lent), and of course his final entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), the Last…

Godly Play

“The desert is a dangerous place. There is no food. There is no water. People die without food and water. Nothing grows there, so when the wind blows, the shape of the desert changes. People lose their way ….” This is the beginning of the first story (from Exodus) that I heard at the Godly Play course in Sheffield, UK, which I attended in March 2017. Father David thought it a good idea to have…

Faith Thoughts: The God of Small Things

Faith Thoughts are sent in by Dr Elisabeth Leembruggen from Holy Trinity Utrecht. It hung there. I did need it and it was on sale. This high tech, 21st century wonder, cost more than average. It was a good deal by any reckoning. I debated, perhaps too long. What were pros? What were the cons? Did I really need this? Was I just buying another ‘unnecessary thing’ to clutter the cupboards? In the end, having weighed…
