The children of Holy Trinity church have been enjoying Christmas and have made a little present of their own.
Travelling over to London on the Eurostar in mid-November, I saw my first Christmas tree of the season. It was a giant silver variety placed prominently on the concourse of St. Pancras Station. And I was reminded that ‘the Christmas season’ starts earlier in the UK than in most of mainland Europe. And to be sure, this year, the Christmas spirit is sorely needed to boost flagging High Street revenues and give some cheer to…

The Bishop in Europe: The Right Reverend Dr. Robert Innes Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, BISHOP’S ADVENT APPEAL 2018 This year’s Advent Appeal is to enable St. Andrew’s Moscow to equip their church with a kitchen. St. Andrew’s is committed to the work of reconciliation and the building of trust between peoples. It fulfils this key element of our diocesan strategy in a unique and powerful way. It is not putting it too strongly…
Holy Trinity is holding a number of study evenings through Advent and Epiphany – in English – on ‘Learning to hear God’s voice’. It is a 6-part course, which will be spread across six Wednesday evenings in December, January and the start of February. Across the 6 sessions, we consider Jesus as a model for our life and our service in the church, and so we can learn from how he heard the voice of…
On Friday 7 December Anna van Laere has been invited to speak about the tradition of learning the bible by heart – in her case the Gospel According to Mark. She will tell something about the group she is a part of that learns to memorize the texts together and to music. And she will sing a little part of Marc’s Gospel. The evening will be in Dutch and English. Anna will share with…
Nearing the end of the calendar year, we are often given to think both of first things (like God’s first taking flesh as our Saviour, Jesus Christ, celebrated at Christmas) and last things (the next coming of our Lord into the world, to make all things new – a theme that features throughout the November lections and also, to an extent, in Advent). Moreover, from All Saints (Nov 1) and All Souls (Nov 2) up…
REMEMBRANCE DAY We are used to remembering the fallen in world wars at Holy Trinity Utrecht on Remembrance Sunday, usually with a two-minute silence. Some members of our congregation and the Chaplain also take part in the Memorial Ceremony at the Gansstraat cemetory in Utrecht. Although the Netherlands was not in the Great War of 1914-18, as the Anglican Church in Utrecht we have close links with those who suffered and with our neighbours in Belgium.…
Irenaeus was born in Asia (Turkey) between 115-142 AD and he died ca. 202. While young, he had seen and heard bishop Polycarp (d. 155) at Smyrna. During persecutions under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Irenaeus was a priest (maybe already the bishop?) in Lyon (France). His bishop Photinus (already in prison?) send him to Rome in 177/178 with a letter for Pope Eleutherius regarding Montanism, an excitable charismatic movement. Upon his return to Lyon, Irenaeus succeeded…
This article was written by the Right Rev Bishop Robert Innes in June. This year is the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the World Council of Churches, an important ecumenical body which the Anglican church is part of. The organisation was founded in August 1948 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. 120 Christian leaders, lay and ordained, gathered recently in Geneva to celebrate the 70th birthday of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The…
