Christian Classics Study Group – Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy

Friday March 6, 6:30pm The next text we are considering is a famous  work by Boethius from the 6th century (it is only about 150 small pages of text). Boethius was a Christian advisor to Emperor Theodoric, but was wrongly accused by envious rivals of treason. He was convicted and, while waiting in prison to be executed, he wrote this important work, one of the most widely read books after the Bible by scholars in the…

Dionysius the what?

Dear Friends in Christ: In January I went to Savannah Georgia for a theological conference on the writings of Dionysius the Areopagite, a 6th century mystical theologian whose precise origins are unknown, and of Richard Hooker, a magisterial Anglican Reformer and apologist who wrote in the late 16th century, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I.  Why would one possibly want to do this? Dionysius wrote five works that we are aware of. He was…

Bishop’s Lent Appeal 2015

Our Diocesan Bishop Robert Innes has written the following appeal which we will plan to support through the blue bag offerings at Sunday services during Lent. Earlier this month I travelled to Athens. During my stay I had the opportunity to visit two detention centres on the outskirts of the city where irregular migrants are held. One of the centres is a dedicated facility for unaccompanied minors. The other is an adult prison, with a…

Council votes for Amersfoort Church Plant!

At the Wednesday January 21st meeting of the Holy Trinity Utrecht Chaplaincy Church Council members present (one absent) voted unanimously in favour of the proposal to establish a new church plant in the neighbouring city of Amersfoort.  A new Selection Committee has been formed, a new position profile approved and the position will soon be advertised for a new Chaplain to establish and build a new Anglican church in Amersfoort.  May God lead us in this…

New Cooking Group!

At the Away Day last year council members discussed all kinds of topics. One of which was fellowship and outreach. For some reason the discussion in one of the small groups was quickly triggered by the words food, cooking, and dinner.  It wasn’t a giant leap to propose starting a cooking group.  So here we are: We hereby present to you the possibility of JOINING THE COOKING GROUP! No you don’t have to cook! You can also help…

Christian Classics Study Group – Charles Williams

On Friday, January 16 at 6:30pm, the Christian Classics Study Group will gather in the Parsonage Hall. David Llewellyn Dodds will introduce us to the works of Charles Williams. David is a member of the Arnhem – Nijmegen Chaplaincy and is an expert in Williams poetry and prose.…

Proposed Amersfoort Church Plant

This month, on January 21, our Chaplaincy Church Council will be making a very important decision about whether or not to begin a church plant in Amersfoort. This is tied in with a decision to expand our ministry by hiring an Assistant Chaplain. A paper, A Vision for a Church Plant in Amersfoort, has been prepared for Council’s consideration. The first part of the document, that will be available in its final form after the…

New Website

This week we have launched the new website for Holy Trinity Church in time for new visitors to our site during the Advent and Christmas season. The website has been created by Robbert de Kuiper with the direction of the Website Subcommittee formed by the Chaplaincy Church Council, and chaired by Peter Boswijk. The website uses a theme from WordPress and so several people will be given access to be able to update the site easily.…

Archdeaconry Synod 2014 Report

By Rosemarie Strengholt, Warden. The first weekend of October, a group of delegates from Holy Trinity Utrecht went to the Archdeaconry Synod. It was held at a place that used to be an Abbey, with a chapel, a church and some beautiful gardens. While the weather was beautiful, we were inside thinking about the different Anglican churches in the Benelux area. The meeting on the first day was about the Luweero twinning project. The idea…

Chaplain’s Letter October: Ballroom Dancing

Dear Friends in Christ, Last month I was asked by a ballroom dance club in Utrecht – USDV U Dance, to write an article on the virtues of dance for a publication in which they are asking representatives of different religions for their thoughts.  It seemed a little crazy for me to write about this, given that, when it comes to dancing, I have two left feet!  But here is part of the article I…
